Los Angeles 2039. It has been three years since Niander Wallace introduced his brand of ‘perfectly obedient’ Replicants, and the ban on synthetic humans has been lifted, at least for the new Wallace models―the older Tyrell Corp’s Nexus 8 units are still hunted by Blade Runners.

Cleo Selwyn, first seen as a small child in Blade Runner 2019, has returned to L.A. some twenty years later, searching for Isobel, a Replicant copy of her real mother who died when she was three. Cleo believes that Niander Wallace is holding Isobel captive, and the only person she can call on for help is the one who saved her so many years ago: Aahna ‘Ash’ Ashina, now an aging and disgraced ex-Blade Runner.

Blade Runner 2039: Luv Vol. 1 on Titan Comics’ website.

Blade Runner 2039: Luv Vol. 1 is created by writers Mike Johnson and Mellow Brown with art by Andre Guinaldo, coloring by Marco Lesko, and lettering by Jim Campbell. Though the series is still ongoing, it will be wrapping up soon. At this time we don’t know what the future holds for Blade Runner as a comic series. Each series takes place 10 years apart after all. with the exception of Black Lotus which is an interquel and focuses on a different blade runner. That would make the next decade 2049 when the second film takes place.

But of course the Blade Runner universe can still be explored beyond 2049, so we’ll have to wait and see. The comics are critically acclaimed and seem to be very popular with fans of the franchise. It would be nice to see it continue as a comic series. Blade Runner 2039: Upgrade Vol. 2, the second collected volume is currently scheduled to be released in February, 2024.
